Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail

Moderate summitviewsacadiafall foliage

Hike to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard, with sweeping views of Frenchman Bay and the Porcupine Islands.

The South Ridge Trail is the finest route to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, offering nearly four miles of open ridgeline walking with panoramic views of Frenchman Bay, the Porcupine Islands, and the distant Blue Hill Peninsula.

Trail Description

The trail begins at the Eagle Lake Road trailhead and immediately enters open terrain. Unlike the steeper north ridge routes, the south ridge ascends gradually through pine forest before breaking out onto the exposed pink granite that defines Acadia’s skyline.

Key landmarks:

  • 0.5 mi — First open ledges with views south
  • 2.1 mi — Junction with Featherbed trail
  • 3.0 mi — Summit of Cadillac Mountain (1,530 ft)

What to Expect

The upper ridge is completely exposed, making this hike particularly dramatic in all seasons. In autumn, the summit often rises above the fog layer, offering an unforgettable “cloud sea” experience. Come early — the summit parking lot fills by 9am on peak days.

Getting There

From Bar Harbor, take Eagle Lake Road (Route 233) west. The trailhead parking area is on the right, 1.4 miles past the Cadillac Mountain Road junction. No parking fee at this lot, but the park entrance fee applies.

Trail Notes

  • Dogs allowed on leash
  • No water sources on the upper ridge — bring at least 2 liters
  • Cell service available near summit
  • Winter conditions persist on the north side through April
